If you have kids you might all enjoy the Kennedy Space Center. It has outdoor and indoor (air conditioned!) exhibits. Spacesuits, demonstrations, they even show you how astronauts pee in space... which is weird but a bit fascinating! KSC might be good for a half day trip- any longer and the kids could get bored. As for beaches, if by "flat surf" you mean long stretches of beach with minimal waves, Daytona is a good choice. However, We would have to agree with the other person who called it "trashy" It is very cheesy and full of the cheapest tourist crap you can imagine. The beach is perfect, though. I live on the Gulf coast. If you are willing to make the drive, Clearwater Beach is a 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive from Orlando. The beach is beautiful and there is plenty to keep the kids busy. Please keep in mind that I-4 between Orlando and the west coast is CONSTANTLY under construction so be prepared for delays no matter what time of day you drive it. If anything, this is probably a good reason to head to the east coast instead
